The rangefinder also offers a number of specially designed distance modes. Bow Mode, for example, simultaneously displays line-of-sight, angle, and true horizontal distances to the target from 5 to 99 yards. In Rifle Mode, you'll receive bullet-drop and holdover information customizable for the exact zeroed range of your rifle in conjunction with the Variable Sight-In (VSI) distance technology. The rangefinder also offers Scan Mode, which continually scans the course and updates the LCD with the latest distance info; BullsEye Mode, which acquires the distances of close-in small targets and game without inadvertently measuring background target distances; and Brush Mode, which ignores the brush and branches in the foreground and displays background distances only.

How Bushnell's Laser Rangefinders Work
Bushnell's laser rangefinders use an invisible, eye-safe Class 1 laser beam (as classified by the FDA), which is "bounced" off distant objects at the press of a button. In the process, the rangefinder uses a high-speed digital clock to measure the time it took for the laser beam to reach the target and return, and then calculates the distance within plus-or-minus 1 yard. The entire process is so fast that less than a second elapses between the time you press the button and the time the exact range appears. The information appears on the unit's through-the-lens LCD display.
Because rangefinders bounce laser beams off targets in order to take measurements, their range is partially determined by the target's reflectivity. So distances to reflective or "hard" targets like rock cliffs and semis can be measured from farther away than those to soft-surface targets such as deer. Ranges for moderately reflective targets, like trees, fall somewhere in the middle. Most experienced hunters will use their rangefinder to estimate ranges to near and distant landmarks before they actually encounter a game animal. By pre-measuring ranges to spots where trophies are likely to appear, they can concentrate on making an accurate shot when the moment of truth arrives.

This range finder is one of the best I've used, other than military grade ones. I've done some capability testing with it during the day and night to see how well it actually performs. Here are a few stats:
Day Time Range on Trees: 1532m
Day Time Range on Houses: 1678m
Night Time Range on Trees: 1441m
Night Time Range on Houses: 1580m.
I took this up to Yosemite National Park also and was able to range rough rock faces out to around 1200-1300m. Now, all this sounds awesome right? Well, it is, the only real problem I encounter with this range finder is the lack of brightness in the display. With the brightness turned all the way up(Power 4 I believe) in bright day conditions, it is nearly impossible to read what range you are lazing. The way around that, that I found, is to laze your tgt. then quickly place your hand over the objective lens of the range finder to make it darker inside the range finder so you can actually read the display. Kind of an inconvenience. When seconds matter to make that great shot, either life saving or life taking, this could be the difference to a completely different ending than you wanted. Overall though, great product. If you're not going to be using it in desert environments you should be good. I would have rated this range finder 5 stars for performance if it was not for my issues with the display. Hope this helps you all.

The only downside I've found, like others have reported, is the display could be a little brighter, but it's still very usable.
The optics seem very good for this price range and it does everything they claim. I have been able to range a boulder at 1667yds. It works very good on trees and brush too, surprisingly far away. The brush and game modes are very handy for ignoring closer/farther targets that may be in the way. The integrated inclinometer is a great feature. The built-in bullet drop compensator would not be desirable for precision shooting, but it does seem to stay reasonably accurate to about 300-400 yards and would probably be good for quick calculations at shorter ranges.
As long as thing thing holds up through several years of service, I will be very happy with this purchase.
Bottom line: You get a LOT of rangefinder for less than $500.

Upgraded to this after 2 failed attempts with Bushnells ARC1200, both with out of the box optics blemishes, though I fell I love with the software, I had to see well too. This was the ticket! Optics clarity/brightness/colors/field of view all greatly improved over the 1200. I've even tested to 1580yrds off of a 10'x30' shack side silhouetted, along with many rolling prairie reads. Only complaint, red illuminated display hard to see in full daylight, even at brightest setting. However, unlike the much more common LCD display found on majority of models on market, which are easiest to read in full light & unreadable in low light, this model's optics' both gathers more light for better low light visibility,& the illuminated red display can be read in complete darkness.
